The kind of comedy that tickles raw nerves and is composed of dizzying, conflicted flights of inner monologue and equally sharp, funny dialogue propelling a subtle, seemingly effortless, but fast-moving plot to one hell of a climax. Scream at the breakneck switchbacks where characters about to make the right decision steer madly (and understandably) in the opposite direction. Be careful of cracks in the pavement that will break your heart. As you can tell from these metaphors, fans of Dermansky’s Red Car should read this immediately. If you’re new to the writer, and just browsing here, you have an impossible choice with gloriously no wrong answer. WARNING: lots of comic and dramatic sex scenes, almost always both.
3.75 stars.This read was entertaining, kind of fun and definitely captured the disfunction of so many but in a very entertaining way. I liked it , it was nice, wink ,wink !! I could handle how it ended because it matched this dysfunctional bunch but I really, really hope this author goes further with these characters because now I'm very curious to see where and how they all go on from here.They immediately need therapy and probably a penicillin shot .I would recommend this read because the characters are crazy, wild , needy ,immature, emotional wrecks and you just can't help but get pulled into their disfunction.Dear author please,please dont just end it here , come on second book titled "Not So Very Nice and Definitely Very Crazy "because you have a great group of nutters that need to find their nutter-mates !
The novel focuses on the characters' deep flaws which they reveal abundantly in first-person. They appear to be reliable narrators but they are just giving a blow-by-blow of everything they do wrong, and their disinterest in worrying about or analyzing how they bring about their own problems is what makes this so funny. They all speak in clipped sentences, even the writing professor whose novel no one reads because its sentences are reportedly too long. There are five narrators (for which I am grateful, as that happens to be the maximum number of characters I can keep track of), connected in a farcical way. It's the sort of thing you probably only need to read once, maybe on the beach with a drink—once the joke has been gotten, I don't think there's profundity about the human condition to be gained from a second reading—except that I might read it a second time as an exemplum of writing craft to try to figure out how this structure was pulled off.
Have you ever gasped aloud when reading a book? The last time this happened to me was 15 years ago, and it happened again while reading VERY NICE. What delicious characters and what uproarious positions they get themselves into. Among the most memorable characters are the hapless professor who just wants someone to take care of him so he can write his 2nd novel; the guilt-ridden mother who deserves something sweet all to herself after her divorce; the clueless ex-husband who wishes he could go back in time; and the young college student/daughter whose summer is definitely not going as planned. Some of these characters you can’t help feel sorry for. They all behave badly, but carry a sense of shame for their behavior, too, which ultimately saves them (most of them, anyway) from being despicable. The story is a wild ride—crazy, sexy, unpredictable.
Upfront. I knew this book was going to be good the minute I laid eyes on the cover. I know, I know what they say. The narrative unfolds like a Nancy Meyers film. Summertime. Young daughter, separated parents, beautiful dog, and gorgeous professor. And, of course, the exquisite house in Connecticut. Right down to the good looking mother who loves to cook in her chic kitchen. Don’t let the sparkling pool fool you. This is Marcy Dermansky’s novel VERY NICE.Behind the splendor lies an unintended love triangle. And what seem like subtle messages about the #MeToo movement, our president, and gun violence, amidst a funny story.If you you’re a pick one book to read this summer kind of reader, VERY NICE is an entertaining romp.Naughty but very nice!(4.5 stars)
