Sdn Ldr Pook's book touches upon a subject which is usually forgotten: That there were RAF Harrier GR.3 fighting alongside the RN Sea Harriers on board aircraft carrier HMS Hermes during the Falklands War. His participation from the very beginning makes him a direct witness of one very interesting time; history that touched and shaped many men in both the UK and Argentina in 1982 in the South Atlantic.Unfortunately, while there is clearly a lot to be said about the complete transformation process from a peace-time RAF Harrier unit to an embedded (that's a new word that could have perfectly been used back then to describe the situation) within the RN's carrier HMS Hermes, Mr. Pook presents in this book a rather quick brush through his experience during this war with a few answers, leaving a lot of questions open. The book has some good maps and very interesting and seldom seen photography, albeit a little too sparse for my taste. However, overall it reads like an extract from another book, a few chapters, it is just not "round" enough and lacks important content, like more detail on the work-up period or the life after the war (which explains also the low page count).Particularly interesting is the comparison with Commander Ward's book, Sea Harrier over the Falklands (Cassell Military Paperbacks) , revealing some enlightening similarities and differences, especially regarding the wrong decisions and bad judgment in the use of Air Power displayed by the Flag (generalized in Mr. Pook's book as The Navy). Sharkey Ward's book definitely comes out much better, actually representing a real book and not just a few chapters. If you are looking to fill a gap in your Falklands War library about this particular subject, you will probably be unable to avoid buying and reading this book. I just wish Mr. Pook had taken some more time and had actually written the missing chapters.

Another interesting insight into the Falklands air war. The authors talent and leadership is clear even though his modesty doesn’t admit as much. While this book was clearly a cathartic project for the author, his frustrations with the navy leadership does detract somewhat from the nitty gritty of the tasks he performed. Light on detail but heavy on passion. Worth the read to add another layer to the complex narrative of the conflict.

A little expensive at over $30 for a book of ~250 pages, yes, but a few pages in I became convinced that the book is well worth the prize. The author is one of a rare breed of people who 'been there','done it' and refuses to waste readers' time with politically-correct remarks designed to please everyone. The book covers the crucial contribution of RAF Harriers in the war, a part apparently not well known because of the contempt of RN towards RAF. If you are interested in the Falklands War, aviation technology, ground attack tactics(the book does contains some interesting technical content on stuff like low-level single seat flying and bombing techniques)or just dying for a story from a sincere, professional and passionate man then buy this book now.

As I write this review, I'm looking at my bookshelves and the nearly sixty books I have dealing with or relating to the Falklands War. Like Sdn Ldr Pook's book, many of them were written by UK military men and women who served in the conflict and gives the reader the benefit of their first person experiences. Of all the books I've read on the Falklands, Pook's is one of the least enjoyable, however."RAF Harrier, Ground Attack Falklands" does fill a void in the story of the conflict, relating the war from the perspective of one of the relatively small number of RAF Harrier aircrew who flew combat in the South Atlantic in 1982. The book is also well written, with excellent illustrations and maps, and includes several outstanding appendices where the veteran aviator explains in layman's terms the intricacies of various aspects of combat flying. So far so good, so why did I find the book unenjoyable? One word.....attitude.Almost from the word go, the author harps, carps, bitches, complains, and denegrates the Royal Navy and ship/crew of the HMS Hermes from which he flew. While I don't doubt some, maybe even many, of Pook's compliants were valid, the book all too quickly becomes a rantfest against the RN, especially senior leadership, and the way the Navy did business. In Pook's mind, "different" (from how the RAF did things) was the same as "wrong". In fact, one of the few things the RN seemed to do right in Pook's eyes was pluck him out of the icy South Atlantic after he was forced to eject having been hit by Argentine anti-aircraft fire. Even then, Pook notes he had to work much harder to affect his own rescue since the RN helicopter crew did not send a crewmember down with the winched line to assist the downed aircrew as done in the RAF.With the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War coming in the middle of next year, I hope to see a good number of new/updated/re-released books on the conflict. In particular, I'd like to see books written (in English) from the Argentine side, as well as additional books from the UK detailing missions/servicemen and women not covered in the current literature of field. I'd like to read something by the Victor tankers crews who supported the RAF Vulcan "Black Buck" raids, as well as RAF aircrew who secretly flew RAF Canberra and Hercules aircraft in Chile with Chilean markings during the war. Something from submariners from both sides would also be interesting reading!

A enlightening book on a little known about topic, well researched to make an easy read AAA+++
